Modernising Aeronautical Information Management

Snowflake Software is often best known for its market leading, standards based, data loading and publishing tools. 

Founded over nine years ago by Ian Painter (MD) and Eddie Curtis (CTO), who share a passion for knowledge and all things data exchange, it's no surprise that we continue to help industries and organisations across the globe solve real life data exchange challenges with best of breed technologies and standards. And Aviation is no exception.

Global Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems in use today have reached their capacity to manage existing levels of air transport efficiently. Airport congestion has increased and the percentage of on-time arrivals has steadily declined. And the challenges are predicted to worsen, as air traffic levels are projected to increase threefold by 2025.
 
To overcome these challenges, EUROCONTROL and the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) have established initiatives that aim to revolutionise ATM systems by developing a net centric, global Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) system. Snowflake has been working hard with EUROCONTROL and the FAA alongside organisations in the industry to efficiently overcome the data exchange challenges and demonstrate the benefits of standards based technologies to achieve the goals of real time, distributed information exchange.
 
Modernising Aeronautical Information Management
We recently demonstrated the capabilities of our expertise in the OWS-7 project (an OGC project sponsored by EUROCONTROL and the FAA). Using scenarios reflecting real-world airline operations and flight dispatch activities, OWS-7 demonstrated the benefits to both flight dispatchers and pilots by exchanging and accessing critical information via web services in real-time. Two demonstration scenarios were used to represent real-life Air Traffic Management processes: a transatlantic flight from the USA to Estonia, and a charter flight between the USA and Canada. Both scenarios included flight planning, pre-flight briefing, and in-flight monitoring and assistance (including deviation due to volcanic ash hazard).

this is an interesting application - in the area of flight safety it may have important implications for general aviation pilots as well as the examples described in the presenation.
